ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The Society of the Friends of the Monarch Theatre was registered and incorporated in the fall of 2009 with the Province of Alberta.

The Theatre is owned by the City Centre Development Agency (CCDA) and has its own Theatre Management Committee.  This Society has no direct connection with the Theatre or the CCDA.

In 2010 the Friends received charitable status from the Federal Government, thus allowing donors to the Society to obtain a tax credit for donations (Given that the CCDA is not a registered not-for-profit society and thus cannot have charitable status, it cannot give tax receipts.  Thus, the Friends has the functions of putting on fund-raising events as well as applying for grants, many of which are of the matching funds variety.  The money thus raised is forwarded to the CCDA for use for capital expenditures.  To date, the Friends have provided virtually all the funding for the digital projector and the HVAC system.
