WELCOME TO “THE FRIENDS OF THE MONARCH”

The Monarch Theatre was acquired by the Monarch 1911 Society, a not-for-profit society created by the Rotary Clubs of Medicine Hat. The Society intends to repair and restore the theatre and operate it for community benefit. The Monarch celebrated its re-opening with the Editing Luke documentary “Your Cinema Needs You” with a successful run of seven sold out shows in December and January. (2800 in attendance!) More showings are planned for February 14, 15, 16, 17. Tickets are available at:

After a hiatus in operation caused by covid and the closure of the Monarch, the Society of the Friends of the Monarch have initiated steps to revive the registration of the Society with the Alberta Government Registry and will hold a special general meeting as soon as the active status is confirmed.

This not-for-profit society was formed late in 2009 after the theatre was purchased from Landmark Cinemas by the City Centre Development Agency (CCDA) with funding provided by the City of Medicine Hat. The theatre was built in 1911 and saw service through most of the years since then with the odd exception, including what could have been its final closure in 2005.  Hopefully, it has now been rescued permanently as a true historic site and attractive aspect of downtown.
